Will it work on your operating system?
Almost certainly, and for an honest reason rather than a magic one. Sorted runs on one computer you leave switched on — that machine needs Node 18. Everything else you own only has to send it a message. Below is every system we have been asked about, with a straight answer for each. None of this is a test report; each verdict means we checked what genuinely exists for that system and said so.
We were also asked about 385 names we can find no record of. If one of them is yours and it is real, the rule below still decides it — and we will add it.
Can host your agent
Node 18 or newer genuinely exists for these. One of them is all you need.
- Artix — Arch without systemd; Node in the repos.
- Asahi Linux — Linux on Apple Silicon; Node straight from the distro.
- ChimeraOS — the Linux gaming distro; Node from the repos when it isn’t playing something.
- ChromeOS — turn on its built-in Linux environment and a Debian container hosts the agent; the browser runs the app anyway.
- Core OS — Read as Fedora CoreOS: rpm-ostree layers nodejs from the Fedora repos, or a container does it.
- Crux Linux — the minimal ports distro; Node builds cleanly.
- DragonOS — Ubuntu-based SDR distro; apt or NodeSource installs Node 18 without drama.
- Enlightenment OS — if Bodhi Linux and friends are meant: Ubuntu underneath, hosts fine.
- Enso OS — the Xubuntu respin with the pretty shell; Ubuntu underneath.
- Gentoo — compile Node yourself or take the binary; either way, yes.
- GNU — as in a GNU/Linux system, yes — the toolchain behind most hosts on this page.
- Guix System — the other declarative one; guix install node.
- HexOS — the friendly face on TrueNAS SCALE; Debian underneath says yes.
- i5/OS — as modern IBM i, yes — Node 18 runs in PASE. Releases actually called i5/OS are too old.
- IBM AIX — IBM ships Node.js for AIX — an unusual host, but a real one.
- IBM i5/OS — as modern IBM i, yes — Node 18 runs in PASE. Releases actually called i5/OS are too old.
- IBM OS/400 — as modern IBM i, yes — Node 18 in PASE. A real AS/400 stuck on OS/400 is mail at best.
- Illumos — pkgsrc carries current Node; SmartOS people have run it for years.
- KaOS — an independent rolling KDE distro, alive and packaging current Node.
- Knoppix — the original live CD; Debian underneath.
- KUbuntu — Ubuntu in KDE clothes; Node from the archive.
- KylinOS — China’s Ubuntu-lineage desktop; Node from the archive.
- LibreELEC — just enough Linux for Kodi — and for a Node container on the side.
- LiveOS — if Fedora’s live images are meant: Fedora hosts.
- Lubuntu — Ubuntu, lighter; Node from the archive.
- Mageia — Mandriva’s heir; Node in the repos.
- Manjaro Linux — Arch made comfortable; Node in the repos.
- MOSIX — a clustering layer over Linux; the Linux underneath hosts.
- NeptuneOS — The Debian-based Neptune desktop distro; Node 18+ installs from Debian or NodeSource repositories
- NixOS — declare Node in your configuration and it is simply there.
- OmniOS — pkgsrc carries current Node.
- OpenBSD 7.0 — current OpenBSD packages Node 18+; 7.0 itself is a few releases shy — update first.
- OpenIndiana — pkgsrc carries current Node.
- OpenSUSE — Node from the standard repos.
- OpenWrt — genuinely — OpenWrt packages Node; a router with enough flash and RAM can host your agent.
- OS/400 — as modern IBM i, yes — Node 18 in PASE. A real AS/400 stuck on OS/400 is mail at best.
- OS/X — if you mean macOS — fully, and it hosts; Pyramid’s OSx from the 80s is mail territory.
- Parrot OS — the security distro; Debian underneath.
- Photon OS — VMware’s container Linux; Node via tdnf or any container.
- PhyOS — Arch-based suckless distro by FT-Labs; pacman delivers Node 18+ exactly as on any Arch.
- PiOS — Read as Raspberry Pi OS: Debian underneath, so Node 18+ installs and the Pi makes a tidy always-on host.
- Pop!_OS — System76’s Ubuntu; Node from the repos.
- POSIX OS — a standard, not a system; implement it well and you can probably host.
- Puppy Linux — tiny, runs from RAM, still a real Linux; Node fits.
- PureOS — Purism’s FSF-endorsed Debian; Node from the repos.
- Raspberry Pi OS — Debian on a £35 board; possibly the single most sensible host on this page.
- Red Hat Linux — as RHEL and its rebuilds today: AppStream carries Node 18+.
- RedOS — Red Soft’s RPM-based Russian distro; a current Linux under the paint, so Node.js 18 installs normally.
- Slackware Linux — the eldest living distro; SlackBuilds carry Node.
- Solaris — pkgsrc carries current Node for Solaris and illumos.
- Solus — independent desktop Linux; Node in the repos.
- TrueNAS CORE — FreeBSD underneath; Node lives happily in a jail.
- TrueNAS SCALE — Debian underneath; run it as an app or in a sandbox next to your files.
- Vanilla OS — immutable Ubuntu-ish Linux; Node in a container is idiomatic.
- Venus — if you mean Victron’s Venus OS: it ships Node-RED — your boat’s battery monitor can host.
- Void Linux — runit and xbps; Node in the repos.
- VoyagerOS — the French Xubuntu respin; Ubuntu underneath.
- Windows IoT — IoT Enterprise is full Windows and hosts fine; the retired IoT Core could not.
- Windows Server 2016 — Node 18 supports it. A perfectly good home.
- Windows Server 2019 — Node 18 supports it. A perfectly good home.
- Windows Server 2022 — Node 18 supports it. A perfectly good home.
- Windows Server 2025 — current Windows Server; current Node. Yes.
- Z-OS — IBM’s Node.js SDK runs on z/OS. Yes, really — the mainframe can host it.
- z/Architecture — the hardware under z/OS and Linux on Z; either way there is a Node for it.
- Zorin OS Lite — Ubuntu underneath; the Lite edition hosts as well as any.
Can run the app
Can’t host, but their browser opens the app like any phone or laptop.
- Chakra — Repos froze around 2019, so its final browsers just clear the 2018 bar; Node 18 never arrived.
- Chromium OS — the browser is the operating system, which is rather the point; ChromeOS proper adds a Linux container that can host.
- Fuchsia OS — on a Nest Hub it keeps a browser about it; Zircon is just its kernel.
- Haiku OS — HaikuPorts carries modern browsers and even Node builds; hosting is enthusiast territory.
- Harmony OS Next — no Android layer any more; its own browser opens the app.
- HiOS — Tecno’s Android; the app installs like any Android phone.
- HyperOS — Xiaomi’s Android; the app installs like any Android phone.
- MagOS — Russian ROSA-based live Linux with Firefox aboard; too stale to trust with hosting duties.
- MorphOS — Wayfarer is a surprisingly current WebKit; the app may well run. Email certainly does.
- ObOS — OBOS was OpenBeOS, which grew into Haiku; WebPositive’s WebKit copes with a simple static app
- OctOS — Team OctOS’s AOSP-based Android ROM; Chrome or the stock WebView opens a static page without fuss
- PeakOS — 10ZiG’s Linux thin-client OS; locked down against hosting, but its kiosk browser opens the app.
- PhoenixOS — Android-x86 in desktop clothes; the app installs.
- Sailfish OS — its Gecko browser is modern enough for the app.
- SfOS — The community’s shorthand for Sailfish OS; same verdict, same Gecko browser, same chancy Node.
- SparkOS — AOSP 13 custom ROM; its Chrome opens the app happily, though a phone makes a flaky always-on host.
- Tails OS — Amnesic, Tor-bound Debian; Tor Browser opens the app, but a resident always-on agent is against its faith.
- Tizen OS — your Samsung TV’s browser opens it from the sofa.
- TridentOS — Taken as Project Trident (ended 2021): its Firefox opens the app; hosting on a dead distro is unwise.
- WebOS — LG’s TVs; the browser is current enough for the app.
- Windows Server 2003 — Below Node 18’s Server 2016 floor; Supermium’s XP-line Chromium backport covers the browsing.
- Windows Server 2008 — Vista-generation, so no Node 18; Supermium still targets Vista, which gets the app open.
- Windows Server 2012 — Node 18 starts at Server 2016; Chrome 109 (2023) was 2012’s last and opens the app fine.
Can still reach it by message
Too old or too odd for the app — and email or a basic browser genuinely works, so your agent still answers them.
- A/UX — Apple’s forgotten Unix; a networked Mac SE/30 can still send email. Wonderful, and enough.
- AmigaOS 4 — its browsers trail the modern web; email is solid and the community is patient.
- Apollo Domain/OS — the workstation that networked before networking was cool; mail yes.
- AROS Research Operating System — Odyssey is a 2013-era WebKit; the reading pages maybe, the app no, email yes.
- Atari DOS XE — Atari 8-bit disk OS; a FujiNet adapter gives real enthusiast messaging from 1979-class hardware.
- Atari MultiTOS — with a network stack fitted, mail moves; FreeMiNT is the livelier route.
- Bell Labs SVR4 — the trunk of the Unix family tree; mail(1) since forever.
- BlueOS — Vivo’s Rust-based watch OS; quick replies leave the wrist, but there is no proper browser or Node.
- BS2000/OSD — Fujitsu’s living mainframe OS; interNet Services speaks SMTP, but nobody has ported Node to it.
- Burroughs MCP — alive inside Unisys ClearPath; mail moves through gateways, nobody chats at MCP.
- Caldera OpenLinux — a 1990s distro; its Netscape mailed happily. Any current distro hosts.
- CCDOS — Chinese-character MS-DOS; underneath it is DOS, so mTCP with a packet driver can post email.
- CDOS — Cromemco’s CP/M cousin for Z80 boxes; a serial WiFi modem gets a surviving Z-2 chatting.
- Cisco SAN-OS — A SAN switch OS whose Call Home feature does send SMTP email, if only about its own health.
- ClearOS — CentOS 7 bones: glibc 2.17 rules out Node 18 binaries, but a gateway distro can always send mail.
- Coherent — the £99 Unix of 1990; uucp mail was its native tongue.
- CP/M-80 — A WizNet-equipped Z80 board such as an RC2014 manages telnet and mail; genuinely practised today.
- CP/M-86 — Same trick as CP/M-80 with rarer kit: serial comms software can push a message out.
- DahliaOS — the Fuchsia-inspired hobby project; young browser, watch kindly.
- Digital Research DOS — same story as MS-DOS: mTCP and patience.
- DNIX — the Swedish Unix; same era, same mail.
- DR-DOS — same story as MS-DOS: mTCP and patience.
- Dynix — Sequent’s Unix; 80s mail culture, fully paid up.
- EPOC — a Psion with a modem sent email in 1998 and, cared for, still can.
- EPOC16 — the SIBO-era Psions; email by modem was real.
- EPOC32 — became Symbian; mail worked then and works in preservation now.
- Eunice — Unix-on-VMS emulation from the 80s; mail, at a stretch.
- FreeDOS 1.3 — mTCP ships in the distro; email from FreeDOS is Tuesday, not a stunt.
- FreeMiNT — a networked Atari with NetSurf and mail — genuinely, and with style.
- GCOS 7 — Bull keeps GCOS 7 alive under emulation; mail via gateways, at a stretch.
- GCOS 8 — Bull keeps GCOS 8 alive; same stretch.
- GEOS-64 — with Contiki and a network cart, a Commodore 64 has genuinely sent email.
- GNU/Hurd — Debian’s Hurd port exists; Node there is a gamble. Linux is next door.
- GS-OS — Marinetti gives the Apple IIGS TCP/IP; hobbyist email is a real thing.
- HP-UX 11i — no Node 18 exists for it; old Firefox builds and mail(1) still work.
- IBM DOS/V — Japanese PC DOS; the mTCP-era tricks apply.
- IBM RT PC OS — AIX’s ancestor; period mail.
- Icaros — the AROS desktop distro; same honest answer as AROS.
- Inferno OS — Plan 9’s portable sibling; messages yes, modern web no.
- Interactive Unix — a proper 80s Unix; mail(1) was the messaging.
- IRIX 6.5 — no modern anything, but an SGI on a network still sends email with pride.
- JoliOS — the netbook cloud-OS moment; its browser was the point, and it aged out.
- KOS — Read as KallistiOS: Dreamcast homebrew with lwIP; broadband-adapter owners genuinely get online.
- MachTen — Unix running atop classic Mac OS; mail was the point.
- Magic Cap — built for messaging in 1994; POP3 reality outlived Telescript dreams.
- MerOS — Mer, the MeeGo-derived core behind Sailfish, ships headless; shell mail is its lot.
- Microware OS-9 — industrial OS-9 has a TCP/IP stack; mail is plausible, chat is not its job.
- MINIX 2 — Gained a TCP/IP stack with 2.0; enough for terminal mail, nothing graphical.
- MINIX 3 — has a ports tree and mail — and secretly runs inside Intel chipsets, where nobody chats.
- Moblin — the 2009 netbook Linux; browsed then, museum now.
- MPE — HP 3000s live on with hobbyists; mail through gateways is period-correct.
- MPE/iX — HP 3000s live on with hobbyists; mail through gateways is period-correct.
- MS-DOS 3.3 — mTCP and Arachne make real email possible on real hardware.

- NxOS — Read as Cisco NX-OS: a Nexus switch OS whose Call Home feature genuinely sends email
- OpenLinux — Caldera’s 1990s distro; its Netscape mailed happily. Any current distro hosts.
- OpenServer — old commercial Unix; mail worked, the modern web is out of reach.
- OpenSolaris — froze in 2010; its heirs illumos and OpenIndiana host happily.
- OpenVMS — VSI has ported Node.js to OpenVMS x86 — check it has reached 18 before counting on hosting.
- Orbis OS — the PS4’s FreeBSD; its tucked-away WebKit reads pages. Sony would rather you played.
- OS/2 Warp — Warp’s Netscape and email really worked; too old for the app, fine for mail.
- OS/2 Warp 3 — Warp’s Netscape and email really worked; too old for the app, fine for mail.
- OS/2 Warp 4 — Warp 4 shipped a browser and a voice; today it is honest email territory.
- OSElas — Pengutronix’s PTXdist-built embedded Linux; BusyBox plus a network stack makes plain SMTP workable.
- OSF/1 — became Tru64; classic Unix mail territory.
- OzOS — Short-lived Debian-with-Enlightenment-17 distro; far too old for Node, old-fashioned mail is fine.
- PC-MOS/386 — multi-user DOS; mTCP-era tricks apply.
- PCDOS — same story as MS-DOS: mTCP and patience.
- Plan 9 — upas mail is native culture; the browsers are ascetic by choice.
- Plurix — Brazil’s home-grown Unix; mail, historically.
- Psion EPOC — a Psion with a modem sent email in 1998 and, cared for, still can.
- QNX 4 — old QNX desktops with Voyager browsed and mailed; honest answer today is mail.
- QNX 6 — Photon-era QNX browsed; today it mostly drives cars, which shouldn’t chat anyway.
- QNX Neutrino — today it runs cars and medical kit; no user messaging on board.
- ReactOS — aims at 2003-era Windows compatibility; today’s Node and browsers are beyond it. Mail works.
- Redox OS — the Rust microkernel; young browser, no Node yet. Watch this space honestly.
- RiOS — Riverbed’s SteelHead WAN-optimiser firmware; it can email its own alarm reports and precious little else.
- RISC OS — NetSurf reads the simple pages; not enough JavaScript for the app. Email is fine.
- RutOS — Teltonika’s OpenWrt-based router OS; some models literally send you SMS themselves.
- SanOS — Ringgaard’s minimal x86 appliance kernel has a real TCP/IP stack; a small SMTP client gets a message out.
- SCO OpenServer — old commercial Unix; mail worked, the modern web is out of reach.
- SCO Unix — old commercial Unix; mail worked, the modern web is out of reach.
- SerenityOS — its browser grew into Ladybird; on Serenity itself, reading pages is the honest claim.
- SgOS — Blue Coat’s ProxySG appliance OS; no browser of its own, but it emails event alerts over SMTP.
- Sphinx OS — MEPIS-based German distro from c. 2005; mail and basic browsing work, CSS custom properties do not.
- ST-DOS — Hobbyist assembly-language DOS clone; a packet driver plus mTCP-style tools puts email in reach.
- Subgraph OS — stalled since 2017; the idea lives on in systems that host happily.
- Syllable Desktop — had its own browser and the Whisper mail client; mail is the honest claim.
- Syllable Server — the server twin; same honest claim.
- System 6 (Macintosh) — MacTCP-era; Eudora made this half the internet’s email once.
- System 7 (Macintosh) — Eudora on System 7 was many people’s first inbox. Still works.
- Tandem NonStop — HPE’s fault-tolerant workhorse; mail via gateways, no browser worth the name.
- Theos — the small-business survivor; terminals and gateways, not browsers.
- Trinux — the floppy security toolkit; text browsers and mail, period style.
- Trusted Solaris — the ancient hardened branch; today’s Solaris is next door.
- UMIPS — MIPS’s own Unix; mail(1).
- UTX-32 — Gould’s Unix; mail(1).
- Uzix — Unix on an MSX; with the network cartridge, mail is heroically real.
- Venix — early PC Unix; mail(1) worked then and works in emulation.
- VOS (Hitachi) — VOS3 mainframes still run Japanese back offices; SMTP yes, Node and browsers no.
- VOS (Stratus) — Stratus VOS is still sold and still fault-tolerant; mail via gateways.
- Windows 3.0 — DOS underneath, so a packet driver and mTCP-era mail tools deliver; the GUI merely supervises.
- Windows 98 SE — RetroZilla reads pages; email works; the app needs this century.
- Windows Embedded Compact — phone-era embedded Windows; its browser might read pages. Treat as mail at best.
- Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs — XP in a thin coat; same honest answer as XP.
- Windows XP 64-Bit Edition — Strictly the Itanium edition; no modern browser ever reached IA-64, but Outlook Express posts mail.
- XTS-300 — BAE-lineage trusted STOP system; it earned its keep guarding email across classification levels.
- Yggdrasil — the first live-CD Linux, 1992; a museum piece that once browsed.
- Zenith CP/M — CP/M-85 on Z-89/Z-100 iron; a serial link and a BBS still get a message out, in period style.
- Zeta OS — BeOS reborn briefly as ZETA; NetPositive-era browsing, working mail.
Hypervisors — give them a VM
Not an operating system you sit at. A Linux guest on any of these hosts Sorted happily.
- DCOS — Mesosphere’s archived cluster layer; not end-user — a Linux node:18 container on it hosts the agent.
- ESXi — give it a small Linux VM and that VM hosts Sorted.
- Hypervisor — whichever one you meant: a Linux guest on it is a home.
- IBM z/VM — alive and well; hosts Linux guests on the mainframe, and one of those hosts Sorted.
- PentOS — Piston’s bare-metal OpenStack distro existed to run VMs; a Linux guest on it hosts the agent.
- QEMU-OS — QEMU runs guests; one Debian guest and you’re hosting.
- vSphere — give it a small Linux VM and that VM hosts Sorted.
No practical way in
Real systems, honest no. Punch cards, deep embedded work, or museum pieces with no way to send a message.
- AIX/370 — the 1990 mainframe AIX, not its living namesake. Museum piece.
- AOS/VS II — Data General’s Eclipse OS; museum.
- Asgard OS — no reliable record beyond scattered hobby mentions.
- Banyan VINES — the network OS the marines loved; servers, not seats.
- BareMetal — a real exokernel-ish hobby OS; no TLS, no chat.
- Batch-11 — PDP-11 batch; the name says it all.
- CactusOS — A genuine hobby OS, but its networking is too green to get a message anywhere.
- CapROS — EROS’s successor; research.
- ChorusOS — the microkernel Sun absorbed; historical.
- ColibriOS — KolibriOS, presumably: astonishing assembly work; modern TLS says no.
- Component OS — no reliable record.
- Concurrent DOS 386 — multi-user CP/M-DOS hybrid; terminals talked to it, not through it.
- Cosmos (C#) — the C# OS construction kit; what you build with it starts offline.
- Cray Time-Sharing System (CTSS) — Cray batch/timesharing; museum.
- Cronus — BBN’s 1980s distributed-systems research; historically real, practically unreachable.
- CTSS — MIT’s Compatible Time-Sharing System — where email’s very first ancestor ran, 1965. Retired.
- Cutemouse — a DOS mouse driver, not an operating system — but a very good mouse driver.
- Data General RDOS — Soul of a New Machine country; museum.
- DEC POS — the Professional 350’s OS; museum.
- Delta OS — if DeltaOS the Chinese RTOS was meant: embedded, headless.
- DexOS — the assembly hobby OS with console dreams; offline.
- Distributed Multi-User OS — a description rather than a system.
- DOS/360 — the small mainframes’ 1966 OS; card decks in, printouts out.
- DOS/VSE — lives on as z/VSE running CICS somewhere; no seat to message from.
- DSM-11 — MUMPS on a PDP-11; its language outlived it into hospitals.
- eCos — embedded and headless; likely inside something you own.
- EDOS — a mainframe DOS variant; museum.
- EMAS — Edinburgh’s mainframe OS; fondly remembered, firmly historical.
- Embedded Configurable Operating System — eCos by its Sunday name; embedded, headless.
- Eos — Taken as ETA Systems’ EOS; supercomputer and operating system alike are museum pieces.
- ERIKA Enterprise — automotive RTOS; it is in the engine bay, not the group chat.
- EROS — capability research; its ideas outlived its login prompt.
- ETA10 OS — a supercomputer that spoke EOS and Unix briefly; museum.
- Ethos — Security research OS from UIC run as a Xen guest; a lab experiment, not a mail seat.
- ExoKernel — MIT’s research direction, not a thing you sit at.
- ExpressOS — UIUC’s formally verified mobile-OS prototype (ASPLOS 2013); paperware in practice.
- Famos — a footnote we can barely source; treat as museum.
- Fiasco — the L4 with the honest name; research.
- FlexOS — DR’s industrial DOS successor; point-of-sale history.
- FMTOWNS OS — the FM Towns’ Towns OS; CD games and MIDI, not mail.

- FreeNOS — Niek Linnenbank’s teaching microkernel; it boots and schedules but does not do mail.

- IBSYS — batch jobs and tape. Nothing to message with.
- INTEGRITY-178B — the DO-178B one; even more so.
- Intel iRMX — industrial real-time; controls the factory line.
- Interlisp — Medley lives on as a research revival; treat it as a museum with the lights on.
- IOS — Cisco’s router OS moves your packets rather than sending its own. If you meant iPhone iOS: fully.

The rule that decides it, whatever the system: if it can install Node 18 it can host your agent; if it can open a 2018-era browser it can run the app; if it can send an email or a text it can still use Sorted. If it can do none of those, it can’t, and we’ll say so.
